Today I light a candle for my sister and my family.
I cannot be there to comfort and support you because, as a nation, we are having to face up to the stark reality that life and health, even with the miracle of modern medicine, cannot be taken for granted.
Our society tidies away the passing of our loved ones. These last, final acts of tenderness and care allow space to accept fully that our time on earth is limited.
Perhaps it is only by grasping the impermanence of life that we can truly appreciate each moment and experience with our loved ones that is gifted to us?
Rest well, sweet sister, and thank you for being my lifelong friend and ally, and for being the person you were.
